Students will begin to learn the strokes to master legible cursive penmanship. Students will learn one cursive letter each day. They will learn the letter in clas, practice it in their composition book, and review the letter for bellwork the next day. If a student needs extra practice, I will send additional worksheets in their blue folder. If the daily letter is a difficult letter, such as lower case cursive "p" the students may need to spend more than one day mastering the letter.
Manuscript handwriting is a series of straignt lines and curves. The pencil is lifted after each letter. The most difficult aspect of cursive penmanship for young children is remembering not to lift the pencil until they finish the last letter of a word. Cursive penmanship may be more difficult to master, but it is quicker and easier once students have practiced this letter.
Students will begin curisive penmanship by practicing the undercurve letters. The undercurve stroke is the easiest to master. When students have learned a set of letters beginning with the undercurve stroike, they will have a lesson of review letters. We will begin with these lowercase cursive letters: i, t, u, and w.
Students will be given a cursive composition book. Students will practice the letter of the day in their cursive composition book. Students will turn in their cursive composition book each morning with their blue folder.
Students must not "work ahead" in their composition book. It is much easier to teach a child correct letter formation than to retrain them when they have allready acquired incorrect strokes.
Cursive penmanship is really a lot easier to master than it sounds in this explanation of cursive expectations.

Reading Assignments: Dec. 8-12
In my opinion, this is the most difficult story in our second grade reading curriculum. Many second graders do not relate to this story because most of our students live outside the town limits, and have never had any experiences with the mayor or town council. We will talk about the Grundy Town Council and Grundy Mayor Diann Hagy Blankenship but I try to tie this story in with the BUchanan County Board of Supervisors.
Children need to know the Public Service Authority is the county's Water Department. Some children have heard of PSA, but have no clue about the responsibilities of the PSA. Other children live in homes with private wells and septic systems.
Another difficult concept is law enforcement. The students who live in the town limits are familiar with the Grundy Police Department, but the students who live outside the town limits depend on the Buchanan County Sheriff's Department.
Although it will be difficult, I feel sure we can survive this reading story, math, and Christmas.
