Extra Credit Assignments.

Subject: Language Arts

Extra Credit for Mrs. Hale’s Reading/English Class

 You may earn up to 35 points of extra credit within each grading period of approximately six weeks.  Most extra credit assignments are worth 10 points, but some are worth 20.  Donations may be turned in for extra credit as well, but you may only turn in one donation for extra credit per six week grading period per class subject.

10 Point Assignments

1.  Donate one or more of the following: notebook paper, cleaning wipes, sanitizer, tissues, a package of pencils or pens, rulers, whiteboard markers, paper towels, poster paper, scissors, pkgs. of glue sticks, colored paper, five or more school appropriate used novels of 150 or more pages or any other classroom items. Each item is worth 5 points with a limit of 10 points total per 6 weeks.

2.  As you are reading, find five words you don't know.  Copy the sentences from which the words appear and then look up and copy the definition.

3. Pick an author and make a poster or brochure to promote this author.  Be sure to include titles of some of their works, as well as biographical information.

4.  Write a one page letter of appreciation using letter writing standards to a person or business that has helped you in some way.  Express your gratitude to them giving specific examples of what they did that helped you.  Deliver the letter and bring me a copy.

5.  Write a song or poem of 20 or more lines.

 6.  Read about an author you have enjoyed and list 20 facts about this author.

7.  Write 10 questions and interview a parent or another adult about what life was like for them as a teenager.

20 Point Assignment

1.  Go to a museum, live performance or learning venue.  Bring a brochure or ticket stub and write a one page summary of your experience.

2.  Read a fiction book of 100 or more pages.  Summarize the story and then write about how the book's characters, themes or ideas impacted you as a person.  Must be at least one full page typed, or two full pages handwritten.

 I also take up to 25 box tops and/or bottle caps per class per 6 weeks.  Each box top or bottle cap is worth 1 point

Extra Credit Assignments Mrs. Hale's USII History

 

1 research project per 6 weeks. Must be different choices.

 

1.     Research an American President. Information that should be included: early life, military experience, political life, and any other important events that happened during his presidency. (25 points)

 

2.     Research an invention. Information that should be included: who developed it, how it came to exist, what it did, who did it help, and what it replaced. (25 points)

 

 

3.     Research an American battle from an American conflict. Information that should be included:  what war, who was fighting, what lead up to the battle, who was winning before or after battle, who won the battle, where did the battle take place. (25 points)

 

4.     Research any event or person in U.S. history. Must include vital (important) facts and aspects of history. Why is it important and why did you choose it. When did it happen it history and how did it effect the rest of the world (if it did). (25 points)

 

5.     Research a time period from 1865 to Present. (Such as Reconstruction).  Information that should be included:  what time period, who was involved, what was involved, why was it called that, who or what was helped or harmed during this period?  (25 points)

 

RULES:

Paper can be typed or hand written (2-3 pages). Posters must be researched, creative, and organized. Power-points must have sources and be at least 8 slides in length with pictures. Models and projects are accepted. 2-3 sources per project.

 

Handwritten must be readable.

 

Papers should be double spaced and in 12 font.

 

Individual ideas must be run by teacher for approval.

 

Students may also bring items to donate to our classroom including packs of paper, pkgs. of pencils, pens, dry erase markers, or glue sticks, kleenex, hand sanitizer, good binders, scissors, crayons, etc. Each of these items are worth 5 extra credit points, up to a limit of 10 points. I also accept box tops and bottle caps for 1 point each up to 25 points per 6 weeks.

Extra Credit for Mrs. Hale's Science Class

No more than 35 points will be awarded in any class in any 6 weeks.

1. SAVE THE PLANET: Bring photographic proof (of you and how you are saving the planet), and a two paragraph summary. This extra credit may only be done ONCE per six weeks.   (10 points)

2. VISIT A SCIENTIFIC MUSEUM. Create a high quality poster, presentation or TYPE a two page report (double spaced, 12pt font, Times New Roman). the project must answer the following questions:
• What is the main field of science studied in the museum?
• Give 3 examples of the use of the scientific method.
• Describe three things you already knew (about the scientific subject) before you went to the museum.
• Describe three things you learned at the museum.
• Write three questions you have about the field of science or something you saw at the museum.  (25 points)

3. Watch 2 MOVIES/DOCUMENTARIES that involve SCIENCE. Create a high quality poster, presentation or TYPE a two page report (double spaced, 12pt font, Times New Roman). The project must answer the following questions:
• What is the main field of science studied in the movie?
• Give 3 examples of the use of the scientific method.
• Describe 3 things you already knew (about the scientific subject) before you watched the movie.
• Describe 3 things you learned (about the scientific subject) because you watched the movie.
• Write 3 questions you have about the field of science or something you saw in the movie.
• Identify and describe ANY false scientific ideas you saw, or “bad” scientific processes found in the movie. **Be aware that thereis a lot of “bad”science in many movies. Just because it is in a movie does not make it true or even reasonable, sometime. Enjoy finding the distinction!!   (25 points)

4. Going on a FAMILY VACATION? Create a high quality poster, presentation or TYPE a two page report (double spaced, 12pt font, Times New Roman). The project must answer the following questions:
a. What is the main field of science studied at the place?
b. Give 3 examples of the use of the scientific method.
c. Describe 3 things you already knew (about the scientific subject) before you went on you vacation.
d. Describe 3 things ou learned about sience on your vacation.
e. Write 3 questions you have about the field of science or something you saw on your vacation.  (25 points)

5.  Donate items to our class.  You may bring in packs of paper, packs of pencils, pens, or glue sticks, kleenex, paper towels, binders, scissors, dry erase markers, colored paper, crayons, colored pencils, poster boards, etc.  (Each item you donate is worth 5 points)

6.  I also collect bottle caps and box tops.  Each is worth 1 point up to 25 points per 6 weeks.
